Mediterranean Kitchen — See Yours Transformed

A Mediterranean kitchen is built on the pleasures of cooking: hand-painted tile behind the range, an open larder of preserved goods, and a long table where the prep and the conversation happen simultaneously. It is a kitchen designed for people who love food.

What Makes a Mediterranean Kitchen?

The cabinetry is minimal — open shelving on thick plaster brackets holds ceramic bowls, glass jars of preserved lemons and olives, and hanging bunches of dried herbs. Where there are cabinet doors, they are simple frame-and-panel in aged pine or painted in faded sage. Hardware is hand-forged iron. Countertops are honed travertine, terracotta tile, or thick butcher block seasoned with olive oil.

The backsplash behind the range is the room's artistic centerpiece: hand-painted Talavera or Moroccan tile in a bold geometric or floral pattern in cobalt, terracotta, and cream. A copper or hammered steel range hood hangs above. An antique lantern over the island provides warm light. The floor is terracotta tile or aged stone, perfectly imperfect. The room should smell of garlic, rosemary, and olive oil, and it should look that way too.

Palette: Sun-bleached white, terracotta, cobalt blue, olive, and warm ochre
